It’s Friday already (what?!), and I’m meeting again with the loving community of Five Minute Friday at Lisa-Jo Baker’s Tales from a Gypsy Mama for some free writing. We follow the prompt, refrain from extreme editing, write for five minutes and encourage the beauty of each other’s offerings. Write with us?
Today’s word is ROOTS.
{GO}
For weeks these words have lived
in the background of
my world, rising again
and again. Running past my lips in prayer for others,
sitting somewhere deep inside
the recesses of me, pressed down
firm like brown sugar in a cup, shaken out in
clumps here,
there.
…so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith;
and that you,
being rooted and grounded in love,
may be able to comprehend how high, how broad, how deep
the love of Christ that surpasses all knowledge,
that you may be filled
up to all the fullness of God.
(Ephesians 3:17-18)
Rooted and grounded in love,
or I could be any
tree, with any
fruit,
searching meaning with a heart that lives here and
there, without tendrils deep that hold
me.
I’d try to grab with my limby arms at pieces fluttering like leaf
messages,
but these roots plant me in Soil that
sustains, nourishes,
stabilizes,
say you belong here, and let me
remind you who you are, my beautiful
tree.
These roots hold fast to the loam, move deeper into the love
rich,
love in that place where ever flowing waters
run,
and my limbs stretch wide in
embrace.

Oh, I absolutely love that verse. Thank you for sharing your thoughts in a truly lovely way!
I do, too, Becky. One of my very favorites. Thank you for sharing your presence here.
the brown sugar metaphor is fabulous!
Thanks, friend. I have a crazy love for brown sugar, always have.
Beautiful word pictures, the fluttering, the held fast, the wide embrace. Thanks for visiting at my blog, too. Isn’t this community wonderful? Love it. So much inspiration wrapped up in these writers.
Thank you, Maureen. I am greatly appreciative to have found the gathering! It’s so amazing to me to see, as you said, all that inspiration wrapped up in five minutes.
Love that your line breaks look like branches reaching. Beautiful poem.
You know those breaks just felt right, but I didn’t exactly know why. Thanks for pointing out the branches to me. :-)
Magnificent post.
Thanks so much.
Ashley, I love this. It’s getting kind of awkward coming here every week and gushing all over you but really, I just love your writing. It transcends and carries me with it each and every time. You are amazing.
Wow, thanks, Alia. I love awkward. :) And that we get to encourage each other on this journey…so grateful you’re my people.
Amazing beautiful you, the lines look like limbs, the words hold the holy, and my soul knows that holding and gnawing on before the release through the doorway of the lips. Poetry. And I am a fan of yours and this.
Wow, Elizabeth, you sure know how to make a writer feel understood, and known. Thank you, friend. Super fan right back atcha.
More exquisite this sky, this loam, these limbs and roots and leaves like messages, more exquisite these words you find to paint poems than I can find words to say…simply Love.
Bless you, Mama.
So very profound…thank you for enfolding us with God’s Love and Light flowing forth from the Field of Plenty through your words….I bow
Only to him. Man, he is so good.

Did he really, my pal? Wow, what he always wanted you to know. What more could we ask than that are children are rooted and grounded in love? It all starts there, doesn’t it? Love you so much, Kinny.
